Having exchanged contracts, organising your move can commence in earnest. There is lots to do and as ever Northwood’s advice and assistance continues right up to the moving day when we will ensure the keys are correctly handed over having first ensured that your solicitor is happy for us to do so. Below is a checklist and countdown to your moving day which we hope you find informative and useful.
after exchange of contracts
Ask the seller to show you the location of the stop cock.
Demonstrate heating controls/alarm/window locks
Inform you where the keys will be left.
Provide details of utilities.
Provide the same information to your buyer.
Obtain removal quotation.
Arrange for meter to be read.
Empty loft/garage and sell/dispose of unwanted items.
Ensure gas, water, electric and phone are not cut off at new house.
Arrange time of work.
one week before.
Notify everyone of new address.
Arrange for mail to be redirected.
Pay small domestic bills.
Arrange for children and pets to be cared for on the “Big Day”.
Drop off set of keys to Northwood.
the day before
Complete final packing, ensure removal company have clear directions, check parking restrictions at your new property, label all packing boxes with contents and new room location and make a plan of the new house for the removal company.
Check utilities will not be cut off
Get a good nights sleep.
the moving day
Cleaning products, soap, toilet paper, towel, screwdriver, bulbs, torch, kettle, mugs, coffee, tea, milk, sugar, biscuits.
Make final checks.
Overnight bag with change of clothes for family.
Collect keys to new house (only available after legal completion)
